The snow pack is a large source for water.
We found that the snow pack is melting and in 2050 there will be less snow pack than now. As you can see the picture on the right shows how dramatically the snow pack might melt. As climate change makes temperatures higher, it would cause the snow packs to melt.
Scientists believe that the snow pack is melting because of global warming. Global warming, as you probably know, is caused by the CO2 emissions from vehicles, such as cars, motor boats, and oil trucks. Some scientists wanted to know if the air was filled with CO2 1,000s of years ago. They found the answer by examining the small air bubbles in the ice of Greenland. They found that there was CO2 in the air 1,000s of years ago, but also they found that higher CO2 levels resulted in more melting of ice caps. We are seeing this same effect now. In the last 100 years, the average temperature has climbed from 57 to 58 degrees, the fastest rise in history!
When the snow pack melts too fast, it can cause severe floods. As the floods end, there will be droughts. When there are droughts, people will not get enough water.
Our deltas and reservoirs will not hold all the water from the melting snow packs. A good way to help California is to expand the deltas by recovering the marsh lands and expanding the reservoirs.
Another effect of global warming is increased rain which may result in even more flooding. The rain is caused by more water vapor in the atmosphere, that causes more latent heat. Latent heat is the amount of energy in the form of heat released during a downpour, this intensifies the amount of rain. The more rain the more floods, meaning disaster.
Given all the problems caused by global warming, we need to find ways to change our actions to help solve the problem.
Snow Pack Today, Snow Pack Tomorrow
